Ocimnet - Update: Dave Chappelle’s people have denied rumors that he will be returning to TV, web or otherwise. “Absolutely untrue,” Chappelle’s rep Carla Simms told EW.
Dave Chappelle left many a fan out in the cold when he disappeared from the world of TV comedy in 2005, ducking out of Chappelle’s Show in its third season. Now, it looks like he’ll be coming back, on the web.
The Daily is reporting that Chappelle is concocting a new TV show that would air via a paid subscription service like Netflix, Hulu or Sony’s Crackle. The trio are now competing for Chappelle’s affections.
Hulu has been expanding its original programming, adding sci-fi and comedy shows. Such shows tend to perform well; Hulu’s original series often rank in the top 10 or 20 most-watched series on the days when new episodes are posted.
Netflix has also been getting into original content, inking a $100 million deal for David Fincher’s new series, a remake of the classic UK political drama House of Cards. And Crackle, for its part, already features a roster of comedy shows.
What do you think? Can Chappelle come back from six years out of the limelight? Is online the right forum in which to do so?
