Meski sudah berlalu beberapa tahun, namun Profesor Trevor (Brendan Fraser) tak pernah bisa melupakan peristiwa misterius hilangnya Max, saudaranya. Dan misteri ini jadi semakin pelik saat Sean (Josh Hutcherson), putra Max muncul.
Sean datang untuk berlibur. Namun Sean juga membawa beberapa dokumen yang ditinggalkan ayahnya yang menyebutkan bahwa ada jalan yang mengarah menuju perut bumi. Penasaran dengan 'bukti-bukti' baru ini, Trevor lalu mengajak Sean menuju Iceland di mana diperkirakan jalan menuju pusat bumi itu berada.
Untuk melancarkan perjalanan mustahil ini, Profesor Trevor membayar Hannah (Anita Briem) untuk menjadi pemandu jalan. Meski awalnya agak ragu dengan 'ide gila' Trevor, Hannah akhirnya setuju untuk menjadi pemandu jalan petualangan yang tak masuk akal ini.
Profesor Trevor dan timnya akhirnya berhasil menemukan jalan seperti petunjuk yang ditinggalkan saudaranya. Namun perjalanan ini akhirnya malah menjadi petualangan paling menegangkan yang pernah mereka alami. Berhasilkah sang profesor menemukan jalan ke pusat bumi?
Film ini mungkin bukan film pertama yang mengadaptasi novel spektakuler karya Jules Verne. Beberapa sutradara sempat pernah mencoba memvisualisasikan naskah novel legendaris ini. Yang membuat film ini jadi berbeda dengan adaptasi sebelumnya mungkin adalah keputusan untuk membuat film ini menjadi format tiga dimensi. Dan tak tanggung-tanggung, bila kebanyakan film tiga dimensi hanya membuat beberapa adegan saja dalam format 3D, film ini malah sepenuhnya diambil dalam format 3D. Karena sepenuhnya diambil dalam format 3D, maka mau tak mau Anda akan sering mendapat 'kejutan' yang kadang tak terlalu perlu dan berkesan berlebihan.
Sang sutradara, Eric Brevig, yang sebelumnya dikenal sebagai 'master' visual effects yang sempat menggarap film TOTAL RECALL mencoba menuangkan ide liar Jules Verne ke dalam bentuk visual yang memang penuh dengan adegan yang mengejutkan. Dilihat dari sisi visual, film ini memang benar-benar mengagumkan. Adegan yang sebenarnya tak mungkin terjadi bisa terlihat begitu alami dan nyata.
Namun keunggulan film ini akhirnya hanya bertumpu pada sisi visual itu saja. Dari sisi cerita, mungkin kita sudah jenuh dengan ide Jules Verne yang sekarang terbukti bahwa itu tak masuk akal sehingga film ini jadi terkesan mengada-ada. Dan ini diperparah dengan beberapa adegan yang seolah menambah kesan tak masuk akal ini, seperti saat ketiga pemeran utama ini harus terjatuh dari tempat yang tinggi tanpa menderita cedera sedikitpun.
Dari sisi naskah pun sebenarnya tak ada dialog yang cukup 'kuat' sehingga mampu mendongkrak 'kredibilitas' film ini. Ini patut disayangkan lantaran akting Brendan Fraser sebenarnya cukup bagus. Malah bisa dibilang, setelah bermain dalam trilogi THE MUMMY, Brendan jadi identik dengan tokoh petualang. Bisa jadi Brendan adalah calon pengganti Harrison Ford bila ia berencana mengakhiri karirnya sebagai Indiana Jones.

Sean came for a vacation. But Sean also brought some documents left by his father that says that there are roads that lead to the bowels of the earth. Intrigued by the 'evidence' of this new, Trevor then took Sean to Iceland where the expected path toward the center of the earth is located.
To launch this impossible journey, Professor Trevor pays Hannah (Anita Briem) to be the guiding path. Although initially a bit hesitant with the 'crazy idea' Trevor, Hannah finally agreed to become a guide road adventure this nonsense.
Professor Trevor and his team finally managed to find a way like clues left by his brother. However, this trip ended up to be the most exciting adventure they've ever experienced. Did the professor finds its way into the center of the earth?
This film may not be the first film adaptation spectacular works of Jules Verne's novel. Some directors had ever tried to visualize this legendary novel manuscript. What makes this movie so different from the previous adaptation is probably the decision to make this film a three dimensional format. And no half-hearted, three-dimensional when most movies only make a few scenes are in 3D format, the film is actually completely made in 3D format. Because fully captured in 3D format, then inevitably you'll often get a 'surprise' that is sometimes not necessary and memorable too excessive.
The director, Eric Brevig, formerly known as the 'master' of visual effects that had worked on the movie TOTAL RECALL try Jules Verne wild ideas into visual forms that are filled with scenes of shocking. Judging from the visual side, this movie is really awesome. The scene that actually happened could not possibly look so natural and real.
But the benefits of this film ultimately rests only on the visual side of it alone. From the side of the story, maybe we are fed up with the idea of Jules Verne is now proven that it's absurd that this film is so impressed absurd. And this is compounded with several scenes that seemed to give the impression of this absurd, as when three key players should be dropped from high altitudes without suffering the slightest injury.
From the script there was no dialogue was actually quite 'strong' so as to boost the 'credibility' of this film. This is unfortunate because of Brendan Fraser's acting is actually pretty good. In fact, arguably, after playing in the trilogy, The Mummy, Brendan became synonymous with adventurous character. It could be the replacement candidate Brendan is Harrison Ford when he plans to end his career as Indiana Jones.
