NBA 2K12 - 2K Sports won a ton of awards last year for NBA 2K11, arguably the best basketball game ever. But they're still bitter about losing to FIFA at the Spike VGAs. Not happy to rest on their laurels, 2K Sports is out to be the best again, and this time beat everyone.
While there are still a lot of details 2K Sports is not ready to talk about (like how do you follow up on a game that spanned the career of Michael Jordan, the greatest player the game has ever seen?), they used E3 2011 to show off just a few of the presentation improvements for NBA 2K12.
For the E3 demo 2K was playing a match in the recently completed NBA Finals. The Dallas Mavericks hosted the Miami Heat and I got to see some of what the developers are doing to make the post-season feel more like an event and less like just another game of basketball. Because let's face it, with most sports games the postseason is nearly indistinguishable from any of the other games you play.
In the NBA 2K12 demo, the NBA Finals logo is plastered over everything, and there's an added level of pomp and circumstance to the opening cinematic. The character rosters are moving full 3D models of the players. During the game little ads pop up on the bottom showing the rivalries of the teams, and making the game look like a TNT broadcast. The fans in the stage are wearing game shirts, showing their support with a sea of team colors. It's all a lot of fluff but it's the sort of fluff you would expect when watching the Finals on TV.
It's a nice start, and hopefully 2K Sports can follow through with it. One of my biggest complaints with sports games is that they utterly fail to capture the magnitude and excitement of a championship. If NBA 2K12 can make it feel like I've really just completed the NBA Finals then it will be one step ahead of the competition, which is exactly what 2K Sports wants.
